Impeller Machining
5-axis CNC Impeller Machining Service
An impeller is a rotating part of a
centrifugal pump that transfers energy from the motor driving the pump to the
pumped fluid by moving the fluid from the center of rotation. Usually, the impeller machines’s
vanes often have compound curves and are tightly spaced, which makes the
process of machining a difficult task. Moreover, the area between the blades is
often narrow and deep, a bad combination because it requires long, skinny
tools.
Finishing the vanes of the impeller is the biggest challenge, as they are often thin, distorted and close-spaced. Cutting the vanes in one continuous motion using a tapered-end ballnose cutter will ensure a smooth finish and avoid unwanted vibration.
Types of Impellers machines are:-
Open
Impeller
An open impeller
has vanes that are mounted directly onto a shaft and are attached to a center
hub. The vanes do not have a wall that makes open impellers weaker than closed
or semi-closed valves. Open impellers usually clean and repair faster and
easier. For smaller pumps and pumps that
treat suspended solids, open impellers are typically used.
Semi-Closed
Impeller
There is a back wall of semi-closed
impellers which adds power to the impeller. Generally semi-closed impellers
are used for liquids or solid products. Reduced performance is a common problem
with semi-closed impellers, but a major trade-off is the capacity to move
solids.
