Bevel Gear box assembling
How to Assemble Bevel Gears for Optimum Performance?
A
Bevel Gear box is a cone-shaped gear
which transmits power between the two intersecting axels. Bevel gears can be generally classified into straight bevel gears, which do not have helix angles, and spiral bevel gears which do have helix
angles.
Since
manufacturing facilities for straight
bevel gears are becoming rare and straight bevel gears teeth cannot be
polished, rendering spiral bevel gears
superior in terms of noise reduction, spiral bevel gears are likely to become
more common in the future.
Bevel gears can be straight, spiral,
zerol, and hypoid. Because the shape of these types of bevel gears is basically
conical, they all have an optimal position for best performance. This optimum
position is usually determined by the bevel gear manufacturers by running tests of individual gear sets. The gearbox
designer and assembly technician, however, share responsibility for integrating
this ideal positioning into the gearbox. In order to help the technician
assemble the overall gearbox, the designer must provide shimming dimensions
that are easy to measure.
Key Factors of assembling bevel gear boxes
Some
parameters contribute to proper gearbox
assembling that help to ensure smooth and efficient operation. They are;
1. Mounting Distance
2. Backlash
1.
Mounting
Distance: The distance from a locating surface
on the back of one gear to the center-line of a mating gear is the mounting distance. By running the
gearset and changing its position, the manufacturer calculates the optimal
value for this length in order to obtain a tooth contact pattern compatible
with smooth running and optimum load distribution between mating gear teeth. It
is then possible to record the optimum
mounting distance. Gear in a package has a unique value for the mounting
distance due to dimensional differences between parts and, in most cases, the
manufacturers and supplier permanently labels this value on each gear.
2.
Backlash: To absorb manufacturing
error and secure oil film thickness on the gear layer, backlash is required. It is the gap between the matting gear teeth
or the difference in the gear tooth width and the matting gear pinion tooth.
Backlash is important for proper gear operation and varies with the size of the
tooth and conditions of operation. Once fully put together, the bevel gears are
cut to have a certain amount of backlash. But in starting or reversing, extreme
backlash or play, if great enough, can cause a sudden impulse or shock load
that can cause serious damage to the tooth.
